Black Pepper Chicken

A delicious and easy recipe for Black Pepper Chicken, packed with bold flavors and protein to fuel your day.

  • 1 lb chicken breasts (or thighs)
  • 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Shaoxing wine
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Shaoxing wine
  • 2 teaspoons dark soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons coarsely ground black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons peanut oil (or vegetable oil)
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 white onion, chopped
  • 2 bell peppers, chopped

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Chicken: Slice your chicken breasts (or thighs) against the grain into 1/4” thick pieces.
  2. Marinate: In a bowl, combine your sliced chicken with the light soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, and cornstarch. Toss until well-coated and let it rest.
  3. Prepare the Sauce: In another bowl, mix the chicken broth, remaining light soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, dark soy sauce, sugar, black pepper, and salt.
  4. Heat the Pan: Heat peanut oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  5. Cook the Chicken: Add the marinated chicken and cook for about 4-5 minutes until browned and cooked through.
  6. Add Aromatics: Stir in minced ginger and garlic quickly to avoid burning.
  7. Veggie Time: Add chopped onion and bell peppers, stir-fry for 3-4 minutes.
  8. Sauce It Up: Pour in the prepared sauce mixture and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  9. Thicken it Up: Mix cornstarch with water and add to the pan, stirring until it thickens.
  10. Final Touches: Remove from heat and let rest for a minute.

Notes

Serve over jasmine rice or quinoa and garnish with green onions or sesame seeds.
