Easy Shepherd’s Pie: A Comfort Food Classic

A warm and hearty Shepherd’s Pie with savory meat and creamy mashed potatoes, perfect for chilly evenings.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Sauté the chopped onion in olive oil for 2-3 minutes until softened. Add garlic and diced carrots, cooking for an additional 5 minutes.
  3. Brown the ground lamb or beef for 5-7 minutes until browned.
  4. Simmer by stirring in tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce, cooking for 2 minutes before adding red wine and simmering for 5 minutes.
  5. Add frozen peas and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Prepare an oven-safe dish, layer the meat mixture and top with creamy mashed potatoes.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden brown.
  8. Cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For added flavor, mix in garlic or cheese into the mashed potatoes. You can also prepare the filling and mashed potatoes ahead of time and bake when ready.
