Homemade Beef and Broccoli

A hearty classic featuring tender beef, vibrant broccoli, and an umami-packed sauce that’s perfect for any dinner.

  • 1 pound of beef (flank steak or sirloin)
  • 2 cups of broccoli florets
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves of garlic (minced)
  • 1/4 cup of soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup of beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooked rice (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prep the ingredients: Slice the beef against the grain and prepare the garlic and broccoli.
  2. Marinate the beef: Mix beef with soy sauce and cornstarch, and marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Heat the wok or skillet: Add vegetable oil and heat over medium-high heat.
  4. Cook the beef: Add marinated beef to the skillet, sear for a minute, then stir-fry until browned.
  5. Incorporate the garlic: Add minced garlic and stir-fry for 30 seconds.
  6. Add the broccoli: Toss in broccoli florets, pour in beef broth, and cook for 4-5 minutes.
  7. Make the sauce: Mix remaining soy sauce, sesame oil, and cornstarch with cold water. Pour over the beef and broccoli, and stir until thickened.
  8. Finish and serve: Remove from heat and serve over rice.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use tamari instead of soy sauce. To spice things up, add red pepper flakes to the sauce.
