French Onion Grilled Cheese

An elevated twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich featuring caramelized onions and Gruyère cheese.

  • 2 large Onions (sweet or yellow)
  • 1 ½ cups Gruyère Cheese (shredded)
  • 4 tablespoons Butter
  • Hearty bread (like sourdough or whole grain)

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions into thin strips, about ¼ inch thick.
  2. Caramelize the onions in a skillet over medium heat with 2 tablespoons of butter for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Season the caramelized onions with salt, black pepper, and optional balsamic vinegar or thyme.
  4. Prepare the bread by buttering one side of each slice.
  5. Assemble the sandwich with Gruyère cheese and caramelized onions between slices of bread, butter-side out.
  6. Cook the sandwich in a skillet over medium-low heat for 3-4 minutes on each side.
  7. Reveal the sandwich after cooking and let it sit before slicing to enjoy the gooey cheese.

Notes

Serve with warm tomato soup and garnish with fresh parsley or a drizzle of truffle oil for an elevated experience.
