Sesame Chicken

A flavorful and healthier homemade version of the classic Sesame Chicken, packed with protein and coated in a savory-sweet sesame sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 450 g chicken, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1.5 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 tsp sesame seeds
  • 1 green onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp flour (or almond flour for gluten-free)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 egg white (or aquafaba for vegan)
  • 1/4 tsp white pepper (or black pepper)
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 3 tbsp honey (or maple syrup for vegan)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1.5 tbsp ketchup (or sriracha for heat)
  • 1.5 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)
  • 1 clove garlic, grated

Instructions

  1. Prep the chicken by cutting it into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Make the coating by whisking together the cornstarch and flour, adding egg white, soy sauce, and water until smooth.
  3. Heat the sesame oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Coat each piece of chicken in the batter and carefully place in the hot oil.
  5. Fry the chicken for 5-7 minutes or until golden brown, flipping occasionally.
  6. Remove the chicken using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  7. Make the sauce by combining garlic, sesame seeds, brown sugar, honey, soy sauce, ketchup, rice vinegar, and shaoxing wine in the same pan.
  8. Combine the fried chicken pieces with the sauce until well-coated.
  9. Serve garnished with chopped green onions.

Notes

For a healthier version, you can bake the chicken at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes instead of frying.
